Hi Rob,

thanks for your comment, yes I forgot to mention that you can leave both perls around the system. Usually I try to avoid this kind of situations just for a matter of keeping stuff "clean" but of course this is a personal preference only.

Thanks for the nice writeup. I added a perl 5.14 installation to my Centos 5.7 system and run assp on it all while leaving the current 5.8.8 installation in place.

Hmmm honestly I don't have much to offer as it worked first try in my case, what you could try to do is to restart vmware services and/or reboot your machine as well and see if that solves anything.

In addition you should have a trace log under /var/log/messages maybe it will give you some hints.

Ahahah yeah I know the pain, I think Fedora does not ship by default with this because in the end you have other way to "find" packages (while I admit they are not so user friendly) like yum search or yum whatprovides or if using the GUI, which usually is the case with Fedora as I would never use it as my server :)), even yumex.

But who knows in the future yum auto complete could be part of the mainstream distro.

Why on earth does Fedora 15 not come with this package? I was going crazy cause its almost impossible to install anything when you don't know the full package name.

I'm glad you jumped on the RH cart I'm sure you will enjoy it, while I did love my short time spent with Solaris when I moved full time to the RH/Linux world I never looked back :)

Great review,
my background is Solaris and considering how the market is so heavy on rhel these days I thought it would be best to look into the rhce. I loved your review and so without hesitation ordered the book. Without a doubt you are correct, the book is fantastic. Just finished building my lab using centos6 and kvm, so excited about moving forward! So hats of to your review and especially the author. ;)

As per hunting it down well... I used all my google-fu abilities ;) Kidding apart it took me quite some time to track down the problem, luckily enough that was not so different from what I do at $WORK, I was lucky enough to find an already written patch as I embracing myself to write it myself and if that was the case you would not have a solution now :)

My configuration:
VMWare Player 3.1.4
Fedora 15 x86_64
Kernel 2.6.40.4-5.fc15.x86_64

The patch script ran for a while, then exited with:
"make: *** [vmci.ko] Error 2
make: Leaving directory `/tmp/vmware-root/modules/vmci-only'
Unable to install vmci"

However, it apparently did enough to allow me to launch VMWare Player without the previous problems :)

You need to install the "patch" package which is used to patch the software (many memories from when we used to compile everything from source and manage patches manually :)) with :

yum install patch
